Why “Detour Learning”?
At Detour Learning, we believe that learning shouldn’t be limited to a single, well-worn path. The name “Detour Learning” was chosen because sometimes the typical way of doing things just isn’t accessible to everyone. When the main road is blocked, we need to find another way: a detour that lets us get creative and embrace the approaches to learning that work best for us. Whether you’re a student, educator, or family member, you deserve learning experiences that play to your strengths and meet your unique needs. Detour Learning is about doing it differently and doing it better: forging new routes, embodying innovation, and making sure no one is left behind on the road to success. Plus, some of the most incredible experiences in life are found in the detours!
I’m Tara Kelly (she/her), and education runs in my blood - I’m a third-generation educator with a lifelong passion for making learning accessible to all. My life has been profoundly shaped by disability, both personally and professionally, which has afforded me a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with finding new ways to learn. I know firsthand that when the usual approach doesn’t fit, it’s not a failure - it’s an invitation to innovate. My work is driven by the belief that every learner deserves a path that works for them, and I bring this commitment to each project, training, and collaboration.
Meet Tara.
With over 20 years of experience in education, I’ve worn many hats: teacher, early interventionist, administrator, project director, and educational consultant. Having worked with learners and families from birth through postsecondary transition, I pride myself on centering their experiences and needs in every project I undertake. I currently lead technical assistance and professional development initiatives for educators and administrators across Pennsylvania, focusing on Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind learners and the teams who support them.
As the 21st century educational landscape continues to shift and evolve, I’m passionate about leveraging technology to break down barriers to access and inclusion. In addition to teaching and supervision, I also hold certifications in instructional design, facilitation, and various educational technologies.
Communication is at the heart of everything I do; I’m fluent in American Sign Language, conversant in Spanish, and constantly seeking out ways to make learning engaging, relevant, and actionable for all types of communicators - particularly those for whom spoken language is not their primary modality. My approach is grounded in data-driven decision-making, culturally responsive practices, and a core commitment to equity.
